44 Best Ways to Style Shoulder-Length, Straight Hair for a Modern Look

good haircuts for straight hair

Using the classic bob as the overall shape for this cut, your stylist can add layers while shaping the bob. This creates the softness and adds much more movement around the outline and surface than the classic bob. A short layered pixie haircut with straight bangs is complementary to a straight hair texture. Style the crown layers and bangs with a small round brush for volume. Apply a root lifting spray before blow-drying for additional height at the root. For added movement, try a straight-layered haircut with longer layers throughout the interior of your long hair.

What's cool about curly flat tops is that they can look very different, depending on the type of curly hair. Frizzy, curly hair (the kind that you'd see in afros) can seem more voluminous. Meanwhile, the wavier variants of curly hair look messier than the average flat top.

#38: Face Frame and Soft Layers on Medium-Length Hair

Are you looking to add femininity to your long layered hair? This hairstyle has bangs that lay softly on your face and blend well with the rest of your hair. The curtain bangs create a flattering frame around your face, accentuating your features and adding a touch of allure to your look. Long curtain bangs work the best for those with long straight layered hair, as they seamlessly integrate with the hair’s natural flow and movement. The key to styling this cut is keeping the bangs longer, which allows them to drape softly down the sides of your face. If you are looking for a sleek, yet low-maintenance hairstyle, this hair makeover is for you!

#41: Sleek Long Bob

A straight short choppy haircut works well for thin hair and medium hair, but both in different ways. For fine hair, the length is blunt and the choppy layers give a little movement without removing too much weight. On medium hair, the choppiness can be adjusted to remove some heaviness from the length and add texture to a stronger outline.

The modern mullet brings a fresh take to the short in the front, long in the back cut with taper fade sides. This style features upright hair on top with tapered short or shaved sides to make a box-like top. This retro-style made famous by celebs such as MC Rakim in the 80s is today, topping the short haircuts for men charts.

Consider making your hair darker if it’s on the finer and thinner side with a blunt perimeter. Rock a shoulder-length straight shag if you’re an older woman and you need to add more life to your locks. You gain movement and shape from the flowing layers curving around your face. One of the easiest ways to achieve a fullness in your hairstyle is a blunt cut, which is a straight line and has no added texture.

I suggest investing in a luxurious color shampoo to ensure the longevity of your fresh color. The long curly fade is a contemporary style that complements its wearer’s confidence. It’s a powerful way of embracing the aesthetic of natural curls while also keeping your hair care routine short, sweet, and simple. By leaving some length on top, you’re able to show off your curls, while the undercut and fade on the sides work to emphasize the look. While low fades aren’t generally a great idea when paired with pomps, there is one exception and it’s this ultra-modern haircut.

#22: Amazing Long Brunette Hair with Side Bangs

These soft face-framing highlights are a subtle yet transformative option that adds depth and dimension to long, straight locks. Enhance the highlighting effect with reverse balayage featuring darker lowlights near the roots and throughout the length. Layers add movement and volume to very long hair, transforming lengths from sweet and girlish to womanly and sophisticated. A trending color technique like hand-painted highlights adds a contemporary touch, while the smooth styling with curled ends feels classically feminine. When you’re ready to add a little something special to your straight hair, try highlights.

Coppery Brunette Style with Flipped Ends

Play around with length to suit your tastes but keep the proportions in check to stay true to the original. It’s not as simple as barking “short back and sides” at a barber, either. Doing so will likely result in an unremarkable snip rather than something that will turn heads.

Even a waterfall braid would look good on any woman wanting braids on their straight hair. These hairstyles can look uber-sleek, with one side being slightly longer than the other. If your hair parts naturally on the side, your cut will be longer on the heavier side of your part.

Any hair with a fringe of any kind is youthful, fresh, and easy to style and maintain. However, you must be sure you are using professional products at home to support this color. I recommend a side-parted and front-layered cut to add fullness to your straight hair!

Long Hairstyle with Quiff

The quiff-like flip in front, when paired with the spiky texture on top and the skin fade on the sides and back, makes it look far more high-maintenance than it really is. The high fade pompadour is a favorite among men who prefer masculine clean-cut styles. Here, longer hair in the front is paired with shorter hair in the back that gradually fades to skin near the ears and nape.

The Best Long Hairstyles For Men

The the previously mentioned crop, this style only has very slight changes in length between the sides and the top and, in this case, the ears. The shape is similar, but the length is longer to allow for more defined curls to show through. The fringe (bangs) is styled toward the front and cut in a straight line across the forehead to show off more of your texture. Tighter, coily curls tend to grow up instead of down; lean in to it! This is not the perfectly round afros you might be thinking of.

However, long male ‘dos can definitely take a more sophisticated, cool edge. Shoulder-length hair with soft layers is a great option for those looking to go long without going overboard.

She also notes the importance of clearly communicating with the stylist about how you want your hair styled, and to ask for clear instructions on care and maintenance. Unlike a longer fro, this shorter version doesn’t require your curls be super tight and compact. You’re going for a round shape, nearly even on the sides and top, to create a frame of curls around your face. If your curls are looser, keep it on the shorter side to make sure they stay in place.

It has been a common style for men for centuries but really exploded in popularity during the 2010s. When a hairstyle is cut in such a way that there is no left-right symmetry, this is referred to as an asymmetric cut.

The outcome of each phase should be sound enough to serve as a guiding principle throughout the rest of the process and to ensure that you never stray too far from your focus. Design thinking helps us tackle “wicked” problems

She thinks TV’s are outdated, and she does not want to waste her time watching TV shows, entertainment, documentaries, or news that she has not chosen and finds 100% interesting herself. We will let you in on the details about our persona’s education, lifestyle, interests, values, goals, needs, limitations, desires, attitudes, and patterns of behavior. We’ve added a few fictional personal details to make our persona a realistic character and given her a name. Start by using tools like Hotjar’s Heatmaps to observe users' scroll and click patterns. Then, watch Session Recordings to follow the entire user journey across your site or product, and use Feedback tools to ask users what’s behind their decisions.

Did You Know Design Thinking is a Non-Linear Process?

No list of exceptional design thinking examples would be complete without mentioning Apple's approach to innovation, management, and design. Use Hotjar to understand how real users experience your product—so you can improve it for them and keep them coming back for more. From tech products, healthcare, travel, and even non-profit community programs, design thinking has proven to be a useful problem-solving tool for innovators and entrepreneurs alike. While clarifying the problem, however, Colin and Hecht pointed out that brushing teeth was a neurotic act for many people. Users didn’t want additional functionality and, in many cases, thought it could potentially cause more stress. Instead, they recommended two solutions that could improve user experience without adding gimmicks.

All design thinking activities—from empathizing to prototyping and testing—keep the end users front and center. Agile teams continually integrate user feedback into development cycles. The design thinking process starts by looking at the needs, dreams and behaviors of people—the end users. The team listens with empathy to understand what people want, not what the organization thinks they want or need. The team then thinks about solutions to satisfy these needs from the end user’s point of view.

There’s no doubt that these personas can be deeply flawed (and there are endless debates on just how flawed). They allow for early involvement with your users in the UX design process, but they should not, of course, be trusted as a guide for your development of products or services. The ideology behind design thinking states that, in order to come up with innovative solutions, one must adopt a designer’s mindset and approach the problem from the user’s perspective.

David J. Bland planned a book using the design thinking methodology

design thinking description

A mindset is a characteristic mental attitude that determines how one interprets and responds to situations. Design thinking mindsets are how individuals think, feel and express themselves during design thinking activities. It includes people’s expectations and orientations during a design project. IDEO is a leading design consultancy and has developed its own version of the design thinking framework. With the foundation ready, teams gear up to “think outside the box.” They brainstorm alternative ways to view the problem and identify innovative solutions to the problem statement. Design thinking offers practical methods and tools that major companies like Google, Apple and Airbnb use to drive innovation.

Lesson 2: Stage 1: How to Build Empathy With the People You Design For

In a short while, we’ll let you in on Lene Nielsen’s model, which sets out to cover this problem through a 10‑step process of creating an engaging persona. Using tools like Hotjar gives you a constant stream of information on what your customers are feeling, how they're experiencing your product, and what their specific needs are. Instead, they combine quantitative insights with people’s ability to synthesize and make sense of data from all sources. According to a recent five-year study by McKinsey & Company, companies that consistently followed design thinking practices generated roughly 32% more revenue and 56% higher returns for shareholders than those that did not.

Phase 3: Ideate

Design thinking is not only for designers but also for creative employees, freelancers and leaders who seek to infuse it into every level of an organization. This widespread adoption of design thinking will drive the creation of alternative products and services for both business and society. The packaged and accessible nature of design thinking makes it scalable. Organizations previously unable to shift their way of thinking now have a guide that can be comprehended regardless of expertise, mitigating the range of design talent while increasing the probability of success. This doesn’t just apply to traditional “designery” topics such as product design, but to a variety of societal, environmental, and economical issues. Design thinking is simple enough to be practiced at a range of scopes; even tough, undefined problems that might otherwise be overwhelming.

This will mean meeting each week’s course module deadlines and fully answering questions posed therein. This helps ensure participants proceed through the course at a similar pace and can take full advantage of social learning opportunities. In addition to module and assignment completion, we expect you to offer feedback on others’ reflections and contribute to conversations on the platform. Participants who fail to complete the course requirements will not receive a certificate and will not be eligible to retake the course. Design thinking techniques and strategies belong at every level of a business.

The team tests these prototypes with real users to evaluate if they solve the problem. The test might throw up new insights, based on which the team might refine the prototype or even go back to the Define stage to revisit the problem. Whether it’s a new app, a community service, or a physical product, the best thing you can do to innovate successfully is keep your user in mind at every step in the design process.

The ultimate goal is to get as deep an understanding of the product and its users as possible. The “empathize” stage of the design thinking process involves learning about customers’ challenges. This stage is focused on gaining a deep understanding of users’ needs, emotions, and behaviors in order to develop meaningful solutions.

The team aims to understand the problem, typically through user research. Empathy is crucial to design thinking because it allows designers to set aside your assumptions about the world and gain insight into users and their needs. The method of developing personas stems from IT system development during the late 1990s, where researchers had begun reflecting on how you could best communicate an understanding of the users. Various concepts emerged, such as user archetypes, user models, lifestyle snapshots, and model users.

This exercise helps you understand a situation or problem by identifying what’s working, what’s not, and areas for improvement. You start by listing out the problem, then identifying the positive aspects (the rose), negatives (thorn), and possible solutions for improvement (the buds). Here are 4 common challenges that teams face when implementing design thinking practices. Testing your concepts and observing how people interact with them helps you understand whether or not the prototype solves real problems and meets their needs, before you invest in it fully. In the Define stage, you will organize the information you have gathered during the Empathize stage. You’ll analyze your observations to define the core problems you and your team have identified up to this point.

Hence, personas do not describe real people, but you compose your personas based on actual data collected from multiple individuals. Personas add the human touch to what would largely remain cold facts in your research. Creating persona profiles of typical or atypical (extreme) users will help you understand patterns in your research, which synthesizes the types of people you seek to design for. A good place to start is user experience (UX) design—creating user-friendly products and services that solve a real user need. During the third stage of the design thinking process, designers are ready to generate ideas.

This third Addie Mills story was filmed in Hollywood so that Jean Simmons, who was appearing in a play, could work in both the special and on stage at the same time. Unfortunately, the story thus relies heavily on backlot sets rather than the more authentic-looking Canadian locations of the first two tales. You do not see the front or side of the house as in House Without a Christmas Tree or Thanksgiving Treasure and Clear River looks very different, much larger than previously portrayed in House and very clearly a set.

Addie finally wins her class Christmas tree in a supervised contest between Gloria Cott and herself by using a guessing technique learned from her father. When she brings the prize home, both she and her grandmother are delighted at the prospect of their first Christmas with a tree. James angrily orders the tree removed; he even accuses Addie of cheating Gloria to win it.

However, The House Without A Christmas Tree is the definitive title of both the special and the novel. Tanya Smithers is another classmate, a rather snooty one at that.

He also designed one of my favorite places in LA, the Wayfarers Chapel. The Derby House was built for businessman James Derby, though due to a separation with his wife he would never live here. The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright. From the photos that I have seen online the inside looks really interesting.

Rolling farmland around Uxbridge, ON, once again "stood in" for Nebraska. It is shown off to great advantage in the bleak November landscape scenes where Addie and Cora Sue bicycle out of town and again on the scenes filmed at Rehnquist's farm. The era is clearly delineated by the radio play that the children rehearse, complete with sound effects.

When write a novel and you are presenting your character to the readers, it is a good idea to take a look at your character development sheet and follow it. There are tons of character development questions that you need answers to in order to get better at character development for your upcoming fantasy novel. Whether you are working on web series, a blog based series, a novel, a screenplay, or a story, it is pertinent that all characters are strong and believable. As a writer, you can’t go without a character development sheet.

The silhouette of your character is one of the most crucial aspects of your design. This is the outline or shape which is left when you remove everything else, and getting it right will lay the foundation for the character. No work consists in a vacuum and there will always be some amount of borrowing and referencing to other artists.

Galleries, tutorials, interviews, reviews and animated shorts for your daily dose of inspiration! Discover the most gifted and influential artists working in animation, comics and illustration, today. Preparation is understanding the theoretical principles that go into great character design. Putting these principles into practice, however, is where the real magic happens.

Add some character to your visuals

You'll use ideas formed when creating the character concept to flesh your character out & learn how to design the side, ¾ view, and back views from the front view. Ideally, the whole world will enjoy your work, but realistically, your audience will be more narrow, so creating a hypothetical ideal audience member can help you make better design choices. Put yourself in your audience’s shoes and consider what other references they have before coming to your work and what they expect to see in the type of story you’re trying to convey.

These references can be from any medium like animation, photography, cinema, comic books, or paintings. Many character designers even have their favorite references on hand as they take on the next step — creating a thumbnail. In the world of visual arts and animation, artists have the opportunity to create characters from absolute scratch. This allows them to use every aspect of design to create a unique character. Check out the video below to better understand how character design is geared more toward storytelling rather than solely creating a great drawing. Before any line can be drawn, character designers must study and prepare.

A competing color may just be a color that is trying to one-up the dominant color in the color hierarchy you’ve established. Using two strong colors in equal measures can draw attention away from the thing you intended to highlight. A tangent refers to the space or area where two things in your design are getting a bit too close for comfort, or are indeed overlapping in a way that the human eye will find uncomfortable. When done wrong, tangents can suggest that two lines in your illustration should be interpreted as if they belong together, when that was not your intention. Perhaps there’s not enough space between the crook of the elbow and the character’s torso, or the ears of the bunny you have drawn are too close together.

character design template

When you finish filling the character template, you will give a comprehensive view of your character idea to your team, and the artist or designer who will create it adequately. Creating a character profile helps you understand your character better. It makes them feel real and consistent throughout your story. It also helps you keep track of important details about your character so you don’t forget them. A character profile is a detailed description of a fictional character. It includes information like their appearance, personality traits, background, motivations, and role in the story.

When designing a character, it is easy to get carried away with color creating vibrant and complex color palettes. But remember that typically, the simpler your color palette is the better. As a contrast, I’ve added the illustration below, which was from an early concept stage, before the character design process. The rules of professional character design are not very strict, the aim is just to explain the models in the best possible way. But they do tend to use a series of model sheets, listed in the index below, which are used especially in animation production. To embark upon the path of artistic excellence, we should always remind ourselves of the importance of robust artistic training, which begins with a firm grounding in the art fundamentals.

There is no right or wrong way to do it, the point is getting to know your character and how they will develop as you’ll write a novel or book. Using the aforementioned steps, you can start to draw up your own character development quetionnaire. You can also copy this sheet and fill in the information accordingly.

Once the family has been covered, you should dive into their external relationships. Even if their family aren’t all that important to or involved in the story, it’s still good to identify them in some way. Readers will never question their decisions, opinions, or emotions when they all make sense based on who they are as a person. Reveal things about their past as it becomes vital to the story. Props are something that your character carries around or uses regularly.

Creating a unique and memorable character from scratch can be difficult. To narrow in on a character’s purpose to a story, consider writing a prompt. At CDR, we curate and share exquisite artworks on a daily basis, providing a constant source of inspiration and creative fuel for our passionate community. (She also wants to change her name, which she hates.) She is a very opinionated young lady and her favorite critical word is "dodo." When she likes something, it's "nifty." I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with.

The House Without A Christmas Tree (1972 +++++ Family, Christmas)

Drizzle chocolate over the batter then cut through batter several times to give a marbled appearance. Pour boiling water over the chestnuts and let stand 5 minutes; remove skin with fingers and a knife. Unlike the other Addie Mills stories, this story was only one hour.

Greystone Mansion

Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence.

The beautifully detailed black and white pencil illustrations are by Charles C. Gehm. Gehm's drawings of the characters superficially resemble the actors enough for viewers to recall the television presentation, yet give them identities of their own so that they are Addie and not Lisa Lucas, James and not Jason Robards, etc. The illustration in the hall of the school after the fight is particularly good. Miss Thompson's first name is Sylvia in the book rather than Peggy. In the television story, Addie gives Tanya Smithers very babyish-looking gloves in bright colors; in the book, they are "icky brown old lady" gloves.

After the death of the owners, the state won a lawsuit to put beach parking where the house is. The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. There are so many incredible famous houses in Los Angeles. Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by.

His mother speaks up, reminding him that the house belongs to her; he responds by threatening to take Addie and move out, leaving her alone in the house. Late that night, Addie sneaks the tree out of the house and surreptitiously donates it to Gloria—the only other student in her class who also goes treeless at Christmas, since the Cotts are too poor to afford one. Whether you are local to Los Angeles or are planning to visit this blog has been created with you in mind. I hope that by sharing my adventures I am able to help you discover new and exciting places in LA. This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique.

The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person. You will receive it ~2 weeks after you complete your first month of service. No videos, backdrops or posters have been added to The House Without a Christmas Tree. Lisa Lucas played Sherry Marshall, a snooty sorority girl, in a 1982 episode of Family Ties, in which Sherry tells Mallory Keaton that she will rush her for the sorority if Mallory will get her a date with her brother Alex. Addie and the King of Hearts was published by Alfred A. Knopf in a hardback edition and subsequently in a paperback Bantam Skylark edition.

Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. The area is stunning and has great views of the city too. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion.

The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out. You cannot go beyond the gate but it is truly spectacular to see.

I came here during the 2019 Museum of the Arroyo Day and really enjoyed it. The homes are beautiful and really take you back in time. The homes are a museum dedicated to the settlement and development of Southern California in its first 100 years. There are special events throughout the year that you can attend including Christmas movie screenings with Street Food Cinema in December. Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too. The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura.

You don't receive a lot of information about her in the specials, but in the books we find out she is one of six children in a happy, messy home. Her brothers have electric trains the two girls like to play with. Carla Mae is basically Diana Barry to Addie's Anne Shirley; she's a quiet, practical girl, much less flamboyant than Addie; her one dream is to "wear a long white dress and a veil and be married." The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926. The house is known for its unique design and colorful history. You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events.

The House Without a Christmas Tree was an impressive debut for Lisa Lucas. She wonderfully portrays a child whose spirit is unquenched by her father's grief. While we feel pain for Addie in having to cope with his brusqueness, we also cannot totally condemn James for it.

I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. This adorable home stands out on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. The rumor is that this house was owned by Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. You can park in one of the beach parking lots and walk down to the home or park by one of the neighbors.

The novel version of the story is entitled A Dream for Addie and was published by Alfred A. Knopf in a hardback edition and subsequently in a paperback Bantam Skylark edition. At the beginning of the story, Addie and her father are bantering about his moustache, which Addie doesn't like and wants him to shave off. Jason Robards had grown the moustache after a car accident; it covered scars from surgery on his upper lip. The lines were used to explain why James suddenly had a moustache. Indeed, at one time this was considered by CBS as a weekly series. Eleanor Perry won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Achievement In Drama Adaptation, and Paul Bogart was nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award.

She wears "sweet pea" perfume (Evening in Paris perfume in the books) and has naturally curly hair. I notice several reviews of the story say that James resents Addie because her mother died when she was born. This is not true, also per James' statements in the story; he says that Addie used to smile all the time as a baby, but Helen just said it was gas and would burp her.

In 1974, Franny Michel (Cora Sue) had a small role in the pilot film to the 1975 Ellery Queen television series, which took place in 1947, the same year as The Thanksgiving Treasure. Penny comes off as a rather worldly-wise version of Addie Mills; she reads voraciously and goes to a school for gifted children. The glasses she is wearing are a lot more "period" than Addie's, but the resemblance is uncanny. It is the holiday season of 1946 and once again James Mills refuses to have a Christmas tree in the house (he has eschewed one since Addie was born—due to depression over the death of his wife from pneumonia, but Addie dhas never been told that). Then she wins the school Christmas tree in a guessing contest (having learned to figure odds from her dad), not knowing or understanding the uproar it will create when her father sees it in the house.

How to Illustrate Characters: 30 Tips for Iconic Character Design

character design template

If your character is a ninja or assassin, try to convert the fact they’re fast, agile, and stealthy by making them small, thin, with long limbs, ideal to climb and hang from a roof. Features that define your character are your best target for exaggeration. For example, if you design a strong warrior or a barbarian, make their upper body muscles crazy oversized and distinct.

Create a color hierarchy

Of course, if you’re hoping to fine tune your craft in a specific genre — say, children’s books — then you should focus on reading anything you can get your hands on in that genre. This way, you’ll stay on top of trends, you’ll be familiar with any and all references, and you’ll get a better understanding of what the target audience enjoys. Plus, if this is your genre of choice, it should be pretty enjoyable. Illustration is, at its core, a storytelling medium that helps readers and viewers get to know a character beyond their appearance. In this sense, centering the story before you even start thinking about the visuals is almost essential if you want to lay a strong foundation and add depth to your character design. Unless realism is a must in your current project, try to create a distinctive shape for your character by playing with the natural proportion.

Showcase your vision with elegant shot lists and storyboards.

Another important trick to make sure your silhouette is balanced is to flip the canvas frequently while you draw. Our brains are fantastic at drawing conclusions of their own, filling in information, and correcting proportions without our knowledge. If you don’t stay vigilant, you may end up drawing a lopsided character without even noticing. If your character is still recognizable and the shape motif clearly distinguishable, you’re on the right track. One of the most important parts of nailing your silhouette is being conscious and intentional about the shape language (also known as shape motif) you use.

Character Development Sheets are Flexible

Now that you know what character development is and how it relates to novel writing, it is time to move forward and understand why exactly you need to have a character sheet template. Character design might look like artistic magic, but it actually involves thought, experimentation and hard work to get a successful result. While the steps we’ve laid out here can help give you a starting framework to develop your character designs, it takes time and practice to hone your skill as a character artist.

Creating compelling characters with our comprehensive character design sheet

The most important attributes are physical appearance and the personality of your character. Imagine your character as the front office manager of your hotel. They will be the face of your company and will represent you and your concepts.

And from a creative process point of view, it’s much easier to work with a clear goal in sight than if you’re pulled in too many directions. Well, we’ve already said that you should be selective with your colors and avoid adding too many to the same design. Then, amongst the colors you have chosen, you might want to pick one dominant color that you use on the most significant part of your design. The other colors on your palette should support this color, not compete with it, to avoid making your palette too crowded. A good way to control that your silhouette and shape language are distinct enough is to strip all colors away until all you have is a blacked out outline.

Step #2: The Character’s Inner Circle

character design template

Once this is done, you’re well on your way to writing an unstoppable book. This article entails the steps to create a character profile, a character profile template, types of character profiles, and other elements to develop a character profile. Every other answer in the character profile template builds up to this. It's critical information to know because it’ll make up the unshakable foundation — and raison d'être — for your story. Whenever you feel like your story is straying off course, go straight back to your character’s story goal and motivation, and you'll find the beating heart of your book.

A prompt will give you a clear, distinct direction as to where to take a character. For a prompt example, take a look at the video below where you can learn more about how a prompt leads to a clear and effective character design. This means not only having a stimulating design, but one that is distinct no matter how we see the character.

Play your favorite song and look for the most welcoming place; in this phase, the final artwork is the reward for your hard work”. More importantly, your design will depend on the experiences of your intended audience. Al is an illustrator at GraphicMama with out-of-the-box thinking and a passion for anything creative.

You’ve reached the end of today’s journey on how to design a character. In conclusion, there isn’t a defined formula, however, there are a few best practices and things to consider before jumping on the drawing board. More importantly, your character is much more than a visual, it has personality, temper, and appeal that makes them distinct from every other character.

This is often where the real emotion shines through, so a small flick of the brush can have a big impact on the final outcome. Getting familiar with some color theory and picking your colors carefully is a good habit to cultivate and can be an important part of making your characters pop. The good news is that this leaves lots of room to experiment.

It’s very important for your character to appeal to you, as it will wear the magic of your love creating it. However, consider that this character should also appeal to the target audience. This is especially important when your character is commissioned. In this case, your character is more restricted and predetermined, but still gives room for creation.

Freud said that we are all the characters that appear in our dreams. All the characters and all the archetypes live within our soul. To represent them, you just need to connect with them, like actors following the Stanislavski method. 🤔 Wondering how other illustrators approach character design? I mean, who can’t help but fall in love with a dog whose ears are so long they keep stepping on them, or laugh at the evil antagonist who is too small to wield their weapon properly? Playing around with the proportions in this way can make your character memorable, and create more variety in a larger cast.

A huge part of this preparation is having a comprehensive understanding of things like anatomy, shape language, psychology, color theory, and story. This video below on anatomical shape language is one of many resources beginner character designers have on improving at their craft. A thumbnail sketch is a visual mockup of the character you want to create. The sketch is an important step, even if you’re not a trained artist. When sketching, use your design templates and sheets to capture the basic shape of your character, proportions, the most salient physical features, and the colors. Next, you’ll fill in details, such as adding buttons to a costume or more volume to the hair.

2024 Norwegian Cruise Ships Newest to Oldest: Complete List

norwegian cruise ship names

The Caribbean deployment is based on 7-day roundtrips from Port Canaveral to Puerto Plata (Dominicana), Road Town (Tortola BVI), Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas USVI) and Great Stirrup Cay Bahamas. In January 2024, JAXPORT's Board of Directors approved a 3-year agreement with NCL for seasonal homeporting in Jacksonville FL (November to April every year through 2028). Before 2016, NCL itineraries 6 days or longer, canceled 56 to 75 days prior to embarkation date guaranteed full deposits back. Under the new cancellation policy, final payment for itineraries 6 or more days is due 90 days prior to departure date (vs the old policy's 75 days). Daily gratuity is an automatic service charge added to the passenger's onboard account each day.

Cabins and suites

On the line's Breakaway-, Breakaway Plus- and Epic-class ships, you'll find giant waterslides and kiddie splash zones and, in some cases, even more over-the-top attractions such as go-kart tracks and laser tag arenas. What you'll find on the top decks of Norwegian ships will vary quite a bit depending on the vessel. The line's smaller ships will have at least one or two pools, sunning areas and usually a sports court area — but not all that much else. The Garden Villas also have private outdoor sun decks and courtyards with hot tubs. Additionally, the Garden Villas on Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star include private outdoor dining areas and steam rooms. One notable outlier among the smaller ships is the 2,186-passenger Pride of America.

Measuring 143,535 gross tons and carrying 3,099 passengers at double occupancy, it's almost identical to Norwegian's last new ship, Norwegian Prima. Both ships are part of the line's new six-ship Prima Class series, which will be rolling out through 2028. The Haven allows passengers to enjoy everything from a private bar and lounge to a custom restaurant, secluded sun deck and calm courtyard, without ever leaving the suite complex.

Passports must be valid for at least six months after your trip, and the name on your reservation must be exactly as it's printed on your passport or other official proof of nationality. In some cases, the Broadway shows are cut down slightly from the original versions, and the casts aren't quite as seasoned as what you'll find on Broadway. Compare that with the hundreds of dollars you'd spend to take your family to a show in New York City. Norwegian cruises are very unstructured vacations, and that's by design.

(November 19 through December 3, 2023) NCL Prima from PortMiami offers 3x 7-day Western Caribbean voyages to Harvest Caye Belize, Cozumel Mexico, Isla Roatan Honduras. (December 2022 and March 2023) NCL Prima from Port Canaveral offers day roundtrips to Western Caribbean. In 2023, NCL had its ever-biggest Europe-Meditarranean itinerary program by deploying in the region 10 ships (Breakaway, Dawn, Epic, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Prima, Sun, Star, Viva).

This costly renovation offers a new-look ship with every stateroom modernized, each bar and lounge changed, not forgetting even more high-end dining experiences such as the elegant Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta. As of December 2021, the ship will be paying its inaugural visit to Australia and New Zealand. The first of the Breakaway Plus-class ships, Norwegian Escape was likewise built by Meyer Werft in Germany.

She is 145,655 GRTs and carries 3,963 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ship’s mural on the hull was designed by David “LEBO” Le Batard. Known as Lebo in the art world, he is recognized for working in a wide spectrum of creative mediums, including murals, paintings & sculptures. At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies. On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Dawn class probably isn't for you.

If you are looking for the best way to explore Hawaii year round, then look no further. Pride of America embraces the local cuisine with special dishes such as the Pineapple Beurre Blanc with the freshest seafood. There are ample bars and lounges where you can sit back, sip on a tropical cocktail and soak up views of Kilauea Volcano and the Na Pali Coast. One of NCL's newer ships, the Norwegian Bliss was designed for the breathtaking sights of both Alaska and The Caribbean. Take in your slice of heaven in the Observation Lounge at the front of the ship. Choose from two Broadway shows or have a giggle with the comedians in the Social Comedy Club, before dancing the night away with the DJs.

Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to become Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship in the fleet beginning in April 2025. She will be sailing Seven-Day Caribbean Voyages from Port Canaveral, Fla. She is 156,300 GRTs and carries 3,571 passengers (based on two per cabin). The cruise line is recently known for its beautiful hull artwork, multi-level go-cart race tracks at sea, and more.

The Dawn Class includes two ships, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star, and debuted in 2001. The smallest NCL ship is the Norwegian Spirit, which is 75,904 GRT and carries 2,018 passengers (based on two per cabin). Norwegian Sun is the second ship in the Sun Class and is the sister of Norwegian Sky.

There are 17 existing ships within the NCL fleet, and 15 of those ships are separated into five classes (a few outliers are considered part of their own, single-ship individual classes). The fleet will increase to 19 once the two new Prima-class vessels have joined. Another highlight is Norwegian Getaway, anchoring in Athens, Greece, and embarking on 7- to 10-day voyages around the Greek Isles. The itineraries aboard the 145,655-gross-ton ship afford passengers over 24 hours in Istanbul, plus visits to renowned locations like Santorini and Mykonos, Greece. Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of ship sizes, from the largest in the Breakaway Plus Class to smaller ships, providing options for different preferences within the cruise industry.

Final payments for holiday sailings (Christmas and New Year) are now due 120 days prior to departure dates, only excluding Norwegian Sky. Previously, for itineraries 6 to 9 nights long, booked customers had to put down a USD 250 pp (per person) deposit. After January 2016, that was changed to USD 250 pp for itineraries 7 to 9 days, and USD 100 pp for itineraries 2 to 6 nights long. Onboard specialty restaurants (a la carte priced or cover charge venues) add an 18% gratuity service charge. In February 2017, NCL started a new (industry's first) cabin upgrade program that allows already booked passengers to bid for upgrades to higher-category staterooms. Since December 2022, fleetwide (on all NCL boats) are offered soft drinks from The Coca-Cola Company.

On some ships, you'll also find Ocean Blue, a seafood restaurant; The District Brew House, a gastropub serving craft beers; and a Mexican spot called either Los Lobos or Los Lobos Cantina. Every vessel has some sort of sushi restaurant, often called Sushi or Wasabi, and there are hibachi-style teppanyaki restaurants on nearly every Norwegian vessel. Also, every ship has a least four and often many more extra-charge eateries.

The Prima-class ships are being built with a higher ratio of space to passengers, which itself is an upscale touch. Smaller only than Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, Norwegian has become increasingly known for some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. As mentioned above, though, the line doesn't just operate giant ships. More than half its fleet comprises vessels that, by today's standards, are considered almost midsize. Four of Norwegian's 19 ships — Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore — are among the 30 biggest ships in the world.

The Breakaway Plus Class ships are known for being the largest and most innovative ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, offering a wide range of amenities and entertainment options. Norwegian Encore is the largest Norwegian Cruise Line fleet ship at 169,116 GRTs. She carries 3,998 passengers (based on two per cabin) and is the last ship built the Breakaway Plus Class. Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

Of note, Norwegian Spirit originally was built for Asia-based Star Cruises (where it was called SuperStar Leo). In addition, the two newest ships in this series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, have large gaming and virtual reality zones called the Galaxy Pavilion. Well-appointed and stylish accommodations offer plenty of room to unwind inside.

Similar to sister ship Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Jewel has connections to several pop culture figures; the ship’s godmother is former First Lady Melania Trump and the ship appeared on an episode of The Apprentice. Launched in 2006, Norwegian Pearl was built by Meyer Werft in Germany. The ship has made appearances on a variety of television shows and documentaries and frequently hosts themed or special interest cruises.

Each of the vessels also offers real Broadway shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters, sprawling spas, casinos that fill half a deck, dedicated children's play zones, and more than 2,000 rooms. The Prima class of ships is the latest and greatest at Norwegian Cruise Line — the vessels that every NCL fan wants to book. Norwegian thus appeals both to cruisers who like a giant resort vibe and those who prefer a resort experience that is more modest. The key, depending on your tastes, is getting on the right ship in the fleet for you.

In that, it's similar to Royal Caribbean — perhaps its closest competitor. As mentioned above, the line also operates one ship (Pride of America) in Hawaii year-round. Norwegian thus appeals both to cruisers who like a giant resort vibe and those who prefer something more modest. The key, depending on your tastes, is getting on the right ship in the fleet. In addition to the very visible Aqua Slidecoaster, Norwegian Aqua will also feature the Glow Court, an epic sport game experience with an LED sports floor.

Norwegian Cruise Line also says the Prima-class vessels offer the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship — including more total pool deck space than any other ships in the brand's fleet. The exclusive, keycard-accessed suite complex called The Haven (found on 13 of Norwegian's 19 ships) comes with private lounges, pools and other tony features. It's essentially a small, luxury vessel that has been planted atop otherwise middle-class, mass-market megaships. These complexes appeal to well-heeled travelers who want a luxury cruising experience while also getting all the fun attractions, entertainment and dining venues only a mass-market megaship can offer. Around 17% smaller than Norwegian's biggest vessels, Prima and Viva are the first tow of six sister ships that the line will roll out between now and 2027 that will significantly change the composition of its fleet. While not the biggest vessels in the Norwegian fleet, these ships will be notably packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and decktop attractions.

Carnival Cracks Down on High Stakes Activity on Pool Deck

NCL's fleet is one of the world's biggest and most innovative ones. NCL ships are big (to really large), well-equipped, offering feature amenities and onboard activities, and sailing worldwide. In June 2019, NCL announced its exclusive partnership with Scarpetta Restaurants via LDV Hospitality (USA-based boutique hospitality company specializing in unique restaurant and bar experiences). By this deal, on the newbuild Norwegian Encore (2019) was introduced fleet's first "Onda by Scarpetta" - specialty restaurant offering dining premium experiences fleetwide. The new restaurant joins Scarpetta's land-based restaurants in NYC, The Hamptons (Long Island NY), Miami FL, Philadelphia PA, Newport RI, Las Vegas NV, and London OH. The new Scarpetta restaurant is similarly designed as a land-based venue, with an interior featuring walnut wood and Calacatta marble.

Also onboard the new ship will be one of the favorites of the Prima class – the 10-story spiraling dry slide, The Drop. Unlike Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, however, Norwegian Aqua will only feature one dry slide instead of a dueling pair. The Aqua Slidecoaster will span three decks and each track is different as they wrap around the ship’s funnel. Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA).

When it comes to the entertainment on Norwegian Sky, there’s never a dull moment. Tickle your funny bone during our comedy variety show inside the Stardust Theatre. Or don your best white attire and dance the night away during our White Hot Party. Stylish and modern appointments include a TV, sitting area and more.

That's about 40% fewer passengers than you'll find on the biggest Norwegian ships. In general, as with the Breakaway Plus ships, these vessels are best for vacationers who like a megaresort-type experience, and they appeal heavily to families with children who love all their deck-top attractions. Each of the two ships in this series — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — holds about 4,000 passengers at double occupancy. There's tons of great entertainment on Norwegian's vessels, plenty of venues for eating and drinking, and all sorts of deck-top diversions — at least on the line's newest ships. Throw in the brand's low starting prices, and it's an even more compelling package. In general, Norwegian's newer ships including Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima and the Breakaway-class and Breakaway Plus-class vessels will be more expensive than the line's older, smaller ships.

As you might expect, pricing for all ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September and October. As is typical for big-ship cruise lines, Norwegian has an extensive children's program, with programs and activities for children as young as 6 months through the age of 17. For those with money to burn (pricing on Norwegian Encore recently was $99 per person for a day pass), the Vibe Beach Clubs are lovely, secluded deck-top hideaways. However, there's a downside for everyone else on board the ships that have them, which is that they take away from the deck-top lounge space available to everybody else. The go-kart tracks (now on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy) are quickly becoming Norwegian's signature can-you-believe-this-is-on-a-ship attraction, and they truly are impressive. The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks.

There is the luxury of full spas, as well as gyms (fitness centres), water parks and excellent shopping. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers amazing cruises in Alaska, Hawaii, Bahamas, Europe and the Caribbean. Norwegian Star is sailing from Southampton in 2020 and Norwegian Epic sails around the Mediterranean. Finally, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029. Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029. Originally ordered by Costa Cruises, Norwegian Sky was built by Lloyd Werft in Germany.

This gem of a ship is the ideal option for cruises to Bermuda, the Caribbean or to discover the beauty of Canada and New England from her decks. Departures are from New York or Boston, as well as the option to cruise one-way between Boston and Quebec (or vice versa). “This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said President and CEO Harry Sommer. The company also launched the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its Caribbean port of call.

In keeping with Norwegian's laid-backness, this might still mean nothing more than a crisper pair of jeans, or maybe slacks with a collared shirt, for men. Instead, you can travel with a state-certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification. That said, Norwegian strongly recommends that all travelers bring a passport. Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Epic, for instance, have the Cavern Club, a reproduction of the British club that gave rise to the Beatles. It comes complete with a cover band that plays the group's greatest hits. Many of Norwegian's biggest ships have state-of-the-art theaters as big as those you'd find on Broadway, with big-name productions to match.
